The irony is that mens high fashion (suits, top hats, ties, scarves, chesterfield coats, etc) almost exclusively has its roots in military uniforms. People today think this stuff is all function following form, but historically it was the opposite. Mens fashion looks the way it does because back in those days, these were the things they discovered wore well and looked good while doing it.

By the time Cary Grant was dressing like this, the original purpose for this whole getup was lost to history, paving the way for fruitloop on the right to make everyone barf.
