the present situation of the Lakota in the Midwest is sad, but, I also have to remember that it was war and the US won. The US just went about it in an atrocious way. the way the first nations are still treated often bothers me. Their reservations have no soul and are governed by absolute corruption. Life didn't give them lemons, life gave them a jar of piss and told them to make lemonade out of that.
But, it's also current year. They have had their movements, opportunities are granted, and they have access to full government aid to become something better. Some of the reservations can be improved through the wonders of modern farming and landscaping. Hell, an irrigation pipeline can be launched to make sure that that there is water available, all government funded, all just for the reservations.
the tribes were warring with each other. My roomie in college in North Dakota was part of the 3 tribes(Mandan/Hidatsa/Iriquora) and he use to tell me about how the Sioux (a huge nation at the time) would send out raiding parties and just slaughter them. It was like a right of passage for the Sioux warriors. It wasn't just the Sioux that were pretty savage. I will say though that the west coast tribes seemed to be less war making and more hunter/gatherer.

Sadly, it will be abused and squandered.
