Then, like you said, it matters not what kind of service they do or do not provide, because they are now "too big" and "too connected" to fail. So they can run the thing into the ground, but nonetheless the politicians they have paid off will be happy to support them with our money.
And if you don't like what Delta is doing, they are basically buying so much influence and ownership in in the government that they themselves are becoming the state. They are always happy to support more airline industry regulation because they know the smaller players can't afford the compliance costs, but Delta will get a subsidy.
