To religious people, talking about their religion is no different than preaching about it. They often don't recognize it, that way, and it's not everyone. Many religions have precepts about proselytizing, and many people who are deeply religious tend to view every encounter as a chance to share the word.
I'm not saying you were, or that you even desired to be. I'm saying it's very hard for some to distinguish the two, even on a separate, intellectual level.
