Yeah, that's unfortunately the "they will make your life very difficult"-part. But if you are a sovereign individual - meaning you don't depend on anyone else for your own survival and can look after your own interests - you are seen as their equal and they leave you alone (such as the Amish). All you need to do is to submit to their way of doing business when dealing with them, which is something China is in the process of destroying.
