I've read it in multiple sources that Wallace Fard Muhammad (probably born Wallace Ford or Wallace Farr, he used several aliases in his life) was an ex-con who started the religion as an off shoot of exotic tales he would tell people regarding the origins of silk garmets from the middle east he was trying to his Detroit patrons.
He basically figured out he could get rich by marketing middle eastern culture to the growing black middle class of the 20th century- a lot of which was an off shoot from the popularity of pan africanism in the 1920s and 1930s. The religion itself is just as equally ridiculous- perhaps more so- than even Scientology and I'm not being hyperbolic. The second wave of the Nation under Elijah Muhammad/Poole realized the even greater marketability this message had when presented aggressively to black convicts.
