The MSM has weaponized the grace period they have to report news ie: if they issue a retraction they are generally immune to lawsuits.

The problem now if they are intentionally lying in their reporting and then issuing a retraction later on. The ultimate problem with this is nobody reads retractions, they read the original story.

This is being used to shape and control the social perception and they know it.
