Union Republicans in then north bought the south property for cheap and started their own businesses. Impoverished Democrats moved north to find jobs and start over. Dems went up, Republicans went down. The Democrats that stayed behind formed the KKK to attack freed slaves and Republicans. NRA was formed shortly thereafter to give freed slaves and Republicans a means to protect themselves from the KKK.
