I'm certainly not going to defend the English language, as ridiculous as it is sometimes, but phonetic spelling techniques were a product of lazy teaching (IMHO) and is one of many contributors to the sad state of education today.

Sadly, that is perhaps the most foolish thing I've ever seen written here, and that is dating back to when we were on reddit. Your opinion does not survive even casual scrutiny and a near endless list of academic studies reinforce the view that phonics is superior for the vast majority of students.
Phonics instruction is the foundation of language instruction and always has been in nearly every language on this earth (save for the pictographic Asian languages). It is common sense that teaching children that symbols correspond to sounds will help them decode written language. Up and until the "modern" education system with "professional educators" (no longer do they call themselves teachers) learning to read was a straightforward process.
Now, in the past 20 years (corresponding to the there has been a sudden explosion of learning disabilities and the emergence of supplemental language instruction specialists who give remedial instruction because of the current fashion of Whole Language nonsense. The children didn't change - the techniques have shifted.

It is not a subject I'm expert on, and at your suggestion, I did a brief bit of homework. Apparently, there are criticisms of phonics, which is probably where I got my impression from, but the overwhelming consensus is that phonics is a foundational principle that holds up against the criticism.
I don't have the time to go any deeper into the subject today, but appreciate being corrected. I am a smarter hamster than when I woke up. I blame my ignorant statement on a general distrust of mainstream academia over the past few decades and an observation of the overall decline in reading comprehension.

On that exception, actually phonics are a big part there too, but even native teachers of these languages don't know this. Most of the characters were designed with one semantic element (that tells you what it means or what it is related to), and one phonetic element (that tells you how it is pronounced).
For example, the character 令 means "to command" and is pronounced ling in Chinese (and rei in Japanese, who borrowed it). All of the following characters are pronounced the same way: 怜 (meaning "clever", with the heart radical on the left), 冷 (meaning "frozen", with the water/ice radical), 鈴 (meaning "bell", with the metal radical), 玲 (meaning "the clinking sound of jewels", with the jewel radical)... and many others. Not all Chinese characters are like this, and not all the phonetic parts are so accurate, but a lot of them are. It's very logical; it just takes a big investment to learn them.
