The Ukrainian government installed by the Obama administration in 2014 is hostile to Russians. It was not a legitimate transfer of power. They immediately delisted Russian as an official language. These regions do not want to be part of Ukraine.
This is not a situation where we should be "defending" Eastern Ukraiine from Russia.
