You don't have the necessary documentation
You don't have anywhere to mail certified copies to
You probably don't have $20+ to send for your birth certificate
Social security cards are free but you , guess what, need ID! and somewhere to mail
It to! they have a new rule that you only get 7 cards in your life time and then NO MORE.
If you're transient and bounce from place to place and bridge to bridge, yeah, you've probably lost your ID and SS card and birth certificate ...... one or two or ten times. I have.
LOOPHOLE; These clinics/agencies can often sign a letter saying you're on their caseload, and waive some of these barriers.
So these clinics will help you pay the fees and they'll even let the dept of health / vital records / social security / etc mail those documents to their mailing address for you to pick up. And if you don't have a safe place to store them they may even KEEP them for you.
Some states you can then get a free ID or drivers license.
Yes! There ARE massive barriers to this!
There ARE workshops and clinics and agencies who will help you in almost every major city!
