They had a whole made-for-tv special on it. His mom fled Cuba in a raft with a bunch of other people. He survived, while many others didn’t. Was rescued out of the water by fishermen, I believe. Because he was a “wet foot” and not a “dry foot” who landed in Florida himself, the government sent him back to his dad in Cuba.
His mother kidnapped him and left for America, while leaving his father behind. He had no idea they were bailing. Well then the mother died, and the father wanted his son back. So we gave his kidnapped son back to him.
The rest is whatever story people want to make up, but as a father if my wife had kidnapped my kid and ran off to a different country I’d want him back too.
It’s funny how people here say they’re for parental rights and keeping the government out of their families, until Elian Gonzales comes up, then it’s how evil we were for giving him back to his dad. Lol.
I remember well. I remember being horrified at this photo. But now, I’m asking, “Who took this photo?” The house was being stormed. There were cell phone cameras and digital cameras were not a thing.
I find myself thinking the same thing now. At the time I was teenager and thought it was odd that they targeted this one kid. Never gave much thought to this photo until recently. Kind of like the picture from inside the Capitol on 1/6 with like 7 photographers surrounding the “Qanon” shaman. It’s all propaganda. When you start to recognize how much we are surrounded by you begin to see the world in a different light.
My favorite was when Ben Stein was asked about this kid on a talk show and the first thing he said about it was, "First of all, let's call him Alien because that's what he is." I lol'd. Hard.
Jesus this picture is a million sorts of horrible. If this had happened under a Republican government, it would be plastered over Reddit on a weekly basis.
I’m always amazed how few people know what actually happened in this, they just want to blame the Clintons for something evil.
This was a dad wanting his kid back after his mother had kidnapped him and ran off to America, then died. I’m sure all the dads here would love to have a foreign government raise their kids, instead of raising them themselves. Right?
The custody battle was between the father and the mother’s parents, and the father won. Then the grandparents refused to return him, which is when this photo was taken. THEY were the ones who had the photographer staged in their apartment because they knew the raid was coming.
This is way more complex than a simple custody dispute.
The father loved Castro and living in Cuba, the mother hated it. The father stayed, and she decided to go for broke and go to the US. She died getting herself and the kid to the US, and was fortunate to have family there to take care of the kid (so no, the government wouldn't have taken care of him.)
So... the kid now lives in a shithole country, under a shitty dictatorship, with a shit economy. I promise that Cuba is nothing like what Michael Moore tried to portray, and this is most definitely not a happy outcome.
Remember when the same people okayed the assault on the Branch Davidians at Waco?
Ruby Ridge
That was before Janet Reno
Now Elian Gonzales is making $50 a year in Cuba, Communism works!!!
Whats happening in this photo? I wasn't old enough to remember this.
Elian Gonzalez
They sent him back and he went on to become a tool of the Castro regime last I remember.
Wow, they really know how to bury history that is unfavorable to the Dems

I agree with this

He wasn’t targeted, he was kidnapped by his mother and taken to the US, without his father’s knowledge, and he wanted his son back.
Yes, and thank you for the context. I just remember thinking he was being targeted when I was a teen.
Is that the kid that washed up on the FL shore, from cuba? What'd they call him, David or something similar?
Elian Gonzalez
Thank you
Yes!

He was seized the day before Easter too, while the press was snoozing for the weekend.
Just democrats doing the bidding of their commie coworkers in Cuba (as usual)
