Your problem is going to a television network and expecting any semblance of scientific literacy. Their bloggers attempt to read a scholarly article and get 90% of it wrong because they know nothing of the subject or how to read journals in general.
Use phys.org if you want actual scientific information. I've rarely read an article there that doesn't list extensive sources. Often times the article is written by the scientist/institution that did the research in the first place.
