Why can't they issue voter ID?

How is it such a hot button issue? They already have the database, it's literally ready to go. For the country who touts its democracy as the most important feature it's laughable that it's such a farce as to be stolen so easily.

BTW i am an absentee voter and voted for Trump in 16 & 20 so please don't sink me if you think i'm having a pop. I'm as angry as the rest of you, just non-resident and find it strange watching all this unfold through the lens of my computer screen...

There's a very simple solution, IMO.

Anyone who doesn't have a photo ID for voting, should be able to obtain one with no out-of-pocket expense. Taxpayers should foot the bill for the ID itself as well as a voucher for reasonable local travel to obtain one.

Show up with a SS card, or an official document containing your SS, and another form of proof of ID and residence (utility bill, letter from the welfare office, etc.)

Check the docs against official records and issue a photo ID, or send the applicant to jail for a few days if they are committing fraud.

There are so few people without a photo ID, the cost to the taxpayer would be minimal and the benefit would be enormous.

Democrats could no longer make the excuse that it is too difficult for minorities to get a picture ID if we break down all of the "barriers".

I've seen Democrats make basically the same arguments regardless, cuz it's not about the ID. Just an excuse for illegal activity.

Ultimately it's way more on a state level regardless. My state allows rent statements, bank statements, and a dozen other things in place of a physical ID, and people bitch anyway.

And then you get states like California where it's "offensive" to ask someone for a voting ID.

Sounds very feasible, I wonder how the dems would find a way to veto that...!?

Surely if they can afford to borrow trillions to ruin transport infrastructure, they can find a couple billion to arrange this extremely simple program of voter verification to be enacted..

The reason it has not been solved in actually incredibly simple. Politicians run on "solving problems" or "opposing the other party's solution to a problem."

If the problem became solved - neither side would be able to run on this issue. That's it. That's the only thing blocking the path. Everything else is just semantics over how to do it. If the R's TRULY, and I mean TRULY wanted it done they could have done it several times over by now. End of story.

The simple answer is because the Constitution does not allow it. The Constitution clearly states that state legislators are in charge of determining the rules of an election and therefore they are the ones that are required to implement voter ID laws. Congress and VP are the ones who verify that there was no fraud and that the election results aren't grossly misstated. That's when pence screwed up

Republicans in Trump screwed up when they didn't call off the presidential election in states where the laws were being followed and decided to have you better have it illegitimate election than to appoint their delegates themselves. The president of Hillsdale College has a great talk about this and how he urged the Michigan state legislators to elect delegates before the election

like anyone in congress other than MTG still believes in upholding the constitution when it doesn't suit their agenda

There is dozen or so. The real issue is that their constituents don't know about the constitution and therefore don't care. I'm volunteering to teach citizenship in the nation merit badge to start doing my part

I always wonder how close we are to needing to expand the social security cap. If you just go by the 330 million census, that's 1/3rd of it in use, not withstanding all the reserved for future people (since a part of your SSN is which city/state issued it), the deceased and all the businesses that also eat up parts of the dataset.

The solution is simple. Use SSN for voter ID. Think of it ---- you wouldn't have to register anyone, states wouldn't constantly have to update voter rolls when people move or die. If people try to vote twice, in the same or two different states, sorry! The beauty is the voter rolls would be clean but the DemonCrats would never go for that since they thrive on the existing chaos. And they can't say poor people can't get an ID, which they know is BS but it's all they got.

They'd still say that minorities can't find the DMV even though where I live they all happen to be in minority neighborhoods and I tend to be the minority when I go inside.

The SSN/ITIN database is so badly abused and corrupted that the IRS doesn't even use SSNs to identify taxpayers anymore.

That's why this is not a viable solution.

Honestly, I think the Social Security number system should be expanded to use the numbers as voter identification numbers. It would make it a lot easier to clear out dead voters and duplicate registrations for people who have moved.
