I recommend that you start training them now especially if they are young to get used to being picked up and held, walking with a leash/harness, sitting on shoulders, and being carried long distance, just in case of emergency situations where cars wouldn't be available.

In that kind of situation. I am not carrying an animal and will not allow my family to either. In that sort of emergency, it is simply extra food to carry to keep the emergency food fed.
