The Crimea wanted out because the Ukraine had an unlawful coup (Mossad orchestrated) and it was within it constitution rights to secede but knowing that the Ukraine would militarily occupied it, asked Putin to step in by uniting with the Russian federation. That is exactly what happen and in regards to this, it was the Ukrainians who fired the first.
