The South wanted the expansion of slavery and that wouldn't have worked well for anyone except maybe the wealthiest planters and even that system was doomed cause of the rise of India and cheaper cotton than even American slave output.
While "war is a racket", defeating the Axis and weakening the commies makes me say we won WWII but like virtually all humans Americans sort of lost the thread with decades of peace and prosperity and rapid change (the pill, 60s, abortion etc).
