Go watch a movie called "the invention of lying" for a super quick explanation of why many out there choose to believe in an afterlife. Yes some parents even tell their kids a lie about the dead dog going off to a farm. However some things in life are too hard to mentally process. Like the death of a child. For some they could not go on without the thought of being able to hold their kid again in the next life.
