I'm getting ready to switch to a sat phone, now that they're affordable and somewhat reliable. I can use the laptop for anything else a smartphone does. Also, sat phones will still work after an EMP or something similar, at least in theory.
You can keep small electronics in an old unplugged microwave for emp shielding - it had a built in Faraday cage to prevent cooking your face while you stare at your nuggies spinnin around 😄
Basically anything that would function as a faraday cage with an earth ground (ideally). Otherwise the pulse will dump energy into the circuit and blow components out.

Make sure you store it in a properly shielded container if you’re planning to have it work after an EMP as it will fry otherwise.
