More than once a week some one would get electrocuted trying to steal wire, hot transmission lines.
Many people would wake up hot in their house at night to discover their entire air conditioner unit stolen for the copper.
New "families" moved into the suburbs with very special loans. Never made one house payment, lived in them for more than a year. But ripped every single sellable item out of it, before being forcibly evicted. Houses were basket cases and usually nearly leveled to rebuild them.
The big targets were the apartment complexes. One of those units for six apartments is much bigger for nearly the same amount of work and movement is more common than outside someone's house.
Lived in the peri Detroit area for a few years.

No lie. A coworker's father had to put a cage around his AC after he replaced it when it got stolen. Blew my mind when I was younger.

I have seen in shady places in KCMO, they will elevate AC units off the ground in order to protect them.
I initially thought elevating them was to keep them out of the weeds and dirt, but this makes more sense.
In ATL, EVERY AC unit has a cage over it. Bad neighborhoods, "nice" neighborhoods.... City is crime cesspool
They’re people holes, bigot.
Perhaps sewers are low-status enough to be only for men.
Excuse me, that term isn't inclusive enough. We refer to them as womenholes, as it directly respects women and is inclusive.
One of the first times I realized we were the beginnings of a PC society was when Portland or Seattle renamed them.
And look how much worse it's gotten in the past 20 to 30 years.
They would put a small weld seam on them in Detroit for the same reason.
Yep - I’ve seen the sec 8ers Incase the suburb on Obama policy and this EXACT thing happened.
