The "victim" is the person who put the person who shot them into a situation where shooting them was the reasonable course of action.
This is the point I always argue. I intend to get through my life without killing anyone, but that decision's taken away from me the second someone forces their way into my home to threaten my safety and violate my sanctity. That's their decision. If they don't want to get shot, don't break into a place you haven't been invited into.
