Traditionally the eastern border of Europe was that river from north to south that divides Ukraine, by that definition that mountainous Caucasus region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea is not even a part of Europe, but the Soviet Union moved that border eastward to Ural and Caucasus mountain ranges so the majority of their population could be qualified as Europeans.
