The Critical Drinker has a great review breaking down why The Hobbit trilogy sucks. My wife and I watch LOTR every year during the winter and we tried including The Hobbit as well but found that it was simply not enjoyable. Neither of us looked forward to watching it.
We found a fan project that made something called the Tolkien Addition. They cut out anything they could that wasnt in the book. It's much better... Not perfect but loads better.
Rewatched recently with my hubbie and said exactly this:
Thank God it was made 20 years ago and not today. The poor Hobbit got botched though with so much filler.
