Sometimes kids in need are placed in our lives and we make decisions in their best interests, or at least what we believe to be in their best interests.
Plenty of people have dated messed up people who have kids, and plenty of times those kids have attached to the person and the person's family and to prevent state removal and parental right severence, the kid is placed with that person.
You seem to have lived in a stable environment all your life, good for you. But many of us haven't enjoyed that type of upbringing.
