I love making friends and family short circuit. I ask if they wanna hang out. They say I’m not vaccinated. I say, but you are. They say, but it’s unknown if the vaccine prevents you from getting sick. I ask “then why’d you get it?”

My tact lately has been to ask people why it's okay to take down your mask for eating and drinking. If this were truly a life-threatening virus worthy of pandemic status and unprecedented lockdowns, wouldn't they be afraid to take down their masks for any reason? What about people with medical exceptions being permitted to wear no mask at all? If this were a legitimately lethal virus, we would make no exceptions.

People usually respond by saying it would be ridiculous to expect us not to eat or drink in public or to restrict vulnerable people from accessing society by forcing them to wear masks. More ridiculous than locking down every business for months? More ridiculous than shutting down churches? But less ridiculous than permitting people to mass gather for protests, right? Only left-wing protests, though, yes?

I've lost every scrap of respect I once had for most of the people in my life. They refuse to acknowledge the doublethink that rules their lives. In their day to day activity, the virus is a complete afterthought; they "forget their mask", the pull it down to eat/drink, they stand right next to each other and chat. Then they turn around and treat the virus like an existential threat to the species - but only if doing so is culturally or politically expedient.
