Knowledge of history helps make sure mistakes are not repeated... Which means you only really get any use of it if you're in an administrative position with a high level of authority.

We used to have a joke in our department.

Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it. Those that do study history are doomed to be ignored while idiots repeat it.

Historians are also employed by think tanks and large corporations to study current events relate them to history and predict future events and trends.

Almost every fortune 500 company would hire a historian either directly or indirectly as a consultant.

At least that's my understanding of the situation.
