11 years ago. the "bandage" they put on my chest was something i called "nasa saran wrap." i have a great, minimal incision line--no railroad tracks. ask. it peels off naturally in 6+ days. oh, warn your mom that she will have some stomach drainage tubes that are usually removed w/in the first 24 hours. the pulling SUCKETH, yea verily, but it's over quick. and you're very welcome; whenever i have a chance to let someone know what's coming down the pike, i try to pass on some very hard-earned knowledge. it's scary enough, but a lil more "handable" with some future expectations explained. ((((((y'all))))))))
The tubes literally suck out the fluids in her chest and are on a pump. They are very painful and that first 24 hours is when she will need serious pain meds. If you can speak to her Dr first ask him to make sure he has written orders to allow her pain meds as needed (specifically narcotics) this is one time it's necessary. God bless her and keep her safe.
good. one more thing (or 27), and i'll stop...i'm very serious about #3. your mama is going to have heavy-duty anesthesia for 4-6 hours, and lots of pain meds. encourage water, yoghurt from the moment she can eat and drink. after she's home, get her off the pain meds as soon as she can comfortably do so; i don't mean totally, i mean the difference b/t 1-2 pills/4 hrs and as needed. she's going to have enough on her plate without having to deal with a wonky gut and the potential issues from THAT, and pain meds slow down the gut. after the 4th day post-op (i was in hospital for 16 days, 9 of them post op), ii preferred a valium over a pain med at night. the very weirdest thing is feeling the bones in your chest shift. they won't fully heal for up to 18 months. get her a tube of mederma for the scars. also, pay attention to the nurses; they are mostly lovely, but there is the occasional asshat. thank the good nurses (and write a letter after your mama is home, mentioning their names; it goes in their files) and bring donuts or pizza one day. they'll appreciate it. raise hell if they make her wait for pain meds and don't let one try to talk you into whatever is easiest for them.
ok, i swear that's all i can think of....if i've managed to demystify this for you or her, than i'm glad. God bless you all, and your mama's medical team. tell her she's got a heart-sister (literally) in alabama that's rooting for her. please let us know how she does.
Sounds like a God-thing that they caught it in time!! May God the great physician, Jesus the loving healer and the Holy Spirit the Comforter be with your mom and your family. π
You got this mama Dinie. It's a difficult journey, but you can do it sweetheart.
Greater is He who is within you, than he who is in the world. Remember that!
This is a new opportunity to fix what's not working right, and start afresh, with a healthier lifestyle with many many more sunny days with kids and grandkids!
And hey, maybe after all the healing is done, your lovely family will send you to a spa or a makeover. That's what we did for my mother in law. She loved it! She's 76 years old and she looks 50. God Bless Sweetheart, fear not - ok?
My mom has an angio coming up. Last time we were at church together a woman gave a testimony. She said she had just a week prior, gone for angio. They found 85% blockage. They immediately treated with a stint. She said she was amazed at how simple it was. She actually was actually ready to go home later that day.
But she really wanted to emphasize how much better she felt afterward.
Praying for your mom. And offering encouragement. She's been coping with some kind of pain and discomfort for who knows how long, but she'll be feeling much better soon.
Oh... and hearing that testimony was so encouraging for my mom to hear that day.
If she has surgury preped. Expect stent implants. They did it to my dad when he had his second heart attack. Good news is they can comfort her and anesthetize. My dad didnt have that luxurury and in middle of massive heart attack he had probes shot up his groin veins while awake. Hasnt had a heart attack in 20 years just about.. Best of wishes
I asked my wife what video gives me the giggles and she immediately responded with "clown world" and I'm damn sure this is what she meant. https://youtu.be/vB-qWovaCLo
Luke 10:9
9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
Psalm 103
103 Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.
2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;
4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;
5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's.
6 The Lord executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.
Revelation 21:4
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
Mark 5:34
And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.
James 5:14-16
Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Luke 8
And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, 44 Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched.45 And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? 46 And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me. 47 And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. 48 And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.
Make sure she has someone always keeping an eye on her care. The recovery in the first days are rough and don't let them deny her pain meds. Call the cardio thoracic surgeon or get the hospital patient advocate involved if you notice things that aren't right and that includes CNAs that come barreling in at 3 am with blood pressure cuffs and tests. I don't want to scare you I was just in this situation myself and the patient advocate made a big difference when needed.
She'll pull through. Just know God is there with you both. I pray he would give you wisdom and discernment as a caregiver in these coming days and that the surgery will be uneventful and her recovery will be swift. <3
hey, hon....as a survivor of the ohs, i have a few tips for your mom...
they will give her a heart-shaped pillow to hold and ask her to cough. alot. the pillow helps w/ the pain and is her friend.
she'll be verra emotional for months. it's normal.
start on anti-constipation meds, early. lots of fluids
breathing therapy and stretches. starting a few days post-op.
they caught this before she became symptomatic; this is good. it means before her heart muscle was damaged.
she will have "pigeon chest" for quite a few months...i think it took a good 9 months for the swelling to go down for me.
i've sicced my angels on her....prayers from 'bama.

you're still groggy, it still hurts, but it's over in less than a minute.

Will be praying for your mom. GOD is able to get her through this.
You are lucky they caught it!! God bless your mom! She will be in the hands of the best medical care in the world!

Prayer said.
TBH that kinda sounds like a lame surprise. Maybe you should tell her first.
Shake it out fren. Pay no mind. We gotchu.
Your original reply. How many different reactions are you going to have?
You asked for humor, you got humor. Fucking nutcase.
Here's another one that tickles me endlessly. https://youtu.be/noKfT_M3ivw
I'm not sure why she doesn't find it funny but I sure do.
If she's a skeptic of medical tyranny then she'll love it. Gotta have a few laughs at the expense of clown world.
Hey jokes aside, I'll pray for Mrs. D. Be well frens.

I sent this video to my brother who was having pretty radical gastro-abdominal surgeries: He loved it.

I will add your family to my prayer list. God bless y'all
Best wishes from Australia. Being a mother is enough to give anyone heart problems, itβs a tough gig!
Modern medicine is nothing short of miraculous. Youβll have many happy times ahead, so cherish them all.
What causes these sort of blockages?
Did she have a bad diet?
I trust she will come out of it well and enjoy many more years with you.
Tremendous mother, believe me.
My Uncle was 85 and had 93% blockage and survived the operation! Medical technology is amazing these days! Praying it goes smooth!!
It is amazing what surgeons can do these days. Dinie's got this!
She will be just fine. This isnβt as uncommon as you may think or have been led to believe. Will send a prayer anyways.
Rips open chest... SURPRISE! Open heart surgery!
How you worded your post just made me chuckle...
Moms are some of the strongest people in the world. Prayers! God bless!
Sorry about that. Was trying to inject some levity into a serious situation. She has my thoughts and prayers in any case. Good luck!
I think you deserve a huge pass because its your mom and it must be a terrible shock. At least it was caught and she now has a fighting chance.
Forgetaboutit. You have a lot on your mind. Every legit pede is sending love, not ridicule, your way.
