well, it used to be. and I guess the resort areas are still ok. I also have friends that have traveled into the interior of Mexico and said it's really not as bad as we think. Though their travel down there was years ago.
My exhusband and I crossed down to Nogales when we visited his family in AZ. I'll never forget going into Mexico. A border city with markets. Little kids standing around trying to sell these little trinkets. I was going to buy something but the in laws told me the kids are forced to do that and then give the money to the adults so it's better not to indulge. My ex had told me not to wear any jewelry when we went and as soon as we crossed into the country a Mexican man pulled him aside. I stuck with the in laws. When ex came back he said the guy wanted to know if he wanted any drugs or girls.
Other than that I enjoyed the markets and fell in love with tala vera pottery. That said, Mexico is not safe and I would not want to live there. I mean, Mexicans themselves don't want to live there... thanks to the cartels. It's sad because Mexico is a lovely country but their government is so corrupt and I don't know how they are going to fix it or if they even want to.
