This would immensely hurt their pockets, and MOST Americans agree that food stamps should not be able to be used for things like soda, which are unhealthy and serve zero nutritional value.

How about we just replace it with a bread and cheese ration? A bit of meat for holidays of course.
Welfare is not supposed to be comfortable.
The problem isn't the comfort of welfare. The problem is that if/ when you start to get back on track you end up losing a significant quality of life because the benefits are fully cut.
When you make someone's life more difficult for doing the right thing, they're not gonna do the right thing. That's a PUNISHMENT for improving yourself. Punishments deter actions.
That's why the inner city is so fucked. It's incentivized to have single mother homes and stay on welfare.
We need to fix the system to INCENTIVIZE people to get better.
I got out of the navy in 2008. There were no jobs but service industry. Had a real bad year and best I could get was 15 hours a week.
I got on food stamps. I could barely afford rent and utilities and it took 2 months to afford fixing my car. At month 6 I finally got a better job. My income increased by less than my food stamps. I was denied my renewal of food stamps.
So by bettering my life, I went from being able to eat real food to a year of eating Ramen, eggs, and potatoes.
You know how much more difficult life is when you're not able to eat decent food?
We gotta fix things. That's what Republicans claim and what many expect from them..... yet we keep systems in place that incentivize staying dependent on the state.
We could afford to provide bread and cheese to all citizens for the current cost of welfare. No loss of welfare... Even bill gates could come in for government cheese if he likes.
Or just defund it. As you point out... The system is trapping people.
You completely missed the point.
This is why we can't fix things. At least with food stamps we're putting the money back into the economy tax free.
Why is it so difficult for people to understand simple things?
Bread lines are never the answer and here you are, advocating for them instead of requiring less government infrastructure and beauracracy, you want more government.
We can have like 5 people managing thousands of people on EBT with a fixed system.
"Here is your EBT card and it'll only work at businesses coded as grocery stores." Which prevents gas stations and convenience stores from being used
"When you get a better job, we'll slowly decrease the amount of benefits you get until you make it to full time employment "
Or we can have an entire system set up that decides how much food a person needs being run like the DMV.
I'm trying to be compassionate and still provide food. Personally I'd shut down the entire corrupt system. It clearly does not benefit our society.
Taking people's money and giving it to others to spend doesn't stimulate the economy anymore than the original person spending/investing it.
