The USA has almost ever single type of environment available to visit. Almost all of them can be visited by car/bus within a couple days. It is an amazing country full of natural beauty to see!
While I was homeschooling my daughter's Pre-K material, she learned how diverse the US is compared to the rest of the world. Why waste your life going to Matterhorn when you can go to Glacier National or Yellowstone?
Depends on how you do it I guess, going from city to city staying in cramped hotels and tour bus while filling your camera up with pictures just to rub your friends nose in your luxury is a waste to me. But, going and checking out locales and ancient artwork, or going on a safari is pretty badass. Renting somebody’s house and going to their local grocery stores and just staying in small towns was cool for my wife and I. We figured out how to get here and there and didn’t rely on a tour guide to do it.
But yeah, I have my eye on lots of road trips around the US from now on. Flying sucks all around.
I recently driove across country, it's not a couple days it's at least 4-5 and that's if you're really pushing yourself, we need to get some based airlines

I don't view going overseas as a waste, but you're right, if you don't at least see the whole US first you're missing out. So much to see and do.
