It didn't seem significant, it just seemed that being a robust society that could assimilate newcomers was a sign of how great the US was.

Then "assimilation" became a dirty word.

Well, when a population is a huge majority none of that factors in. When 80%+ is of group X, then "X privilege" is of no advantage intramurally, it's just a barrier to entry to those not-X.

I suppose the point is that no one expected the Balkanization we're starting to see. Or nobody wanted to talk about it.

That does seem to be the case, especially from the offspring of Asians and Hindus, who are among those who have benefitted most from being birn here rather than in their ancestral lands.
