I don't understand what you're defending here? The notion that everyone is stupid?

Teaching is easy as fuck. Parents do it every day.

Even if people aren't great teachers virtually every meaningful bachelors level subject has an appropriate and reasonably well done youtube explanation at this point.

Our society has multiple ways to displace self-righteous and overly compensated teachers.

I'm saying fixing the public education system would result in better outcomes than moving toward a home schooling solution. The obvious things would be school vouchers, and getting rid of teachers unions. But the non-obvious things would be setting schools up so that they cater the smartest students (like they used to), and not the dumbest ones. It used to be the average grade was a C, and that was alright. Now, if little Timmy doesn't get an A, it's blamed on the school, instead of the fact that Timmy is a lazy and/or stupid bastard.

For a place that shuns leftist group-think, there’s an awful lot of reflex downvoting going on for anyone that dares have a different opinion on the notion of homeschool. What’s wrong with letting people have choices and letting them make up their own mind? You’re making some good points. What a lot of people seem to be missing is that there are a lot of parents whose children come to school knowing next to nothing. The parents have never read to them. They have never taught them basic things like counting money or telling time. If you take away school, those kids are even more screwed. Sure it’d be awesome that everyone had the means and ability to teach their kids. But it’s idealism. What needs to happen is more conservative people going into academia and taking it back. Getting out there and encouraging kids to think critically will do a lot more to change the direction of things than just staying in your house and blocking out the world. That and not all public schools suck. Try moving to a red area where people are still sane. Guess what? You might decide it’s best for your kid to homeschool, and that’s well and good for them, but do you not realize public school will continue to push through kids who will go on to vote and will always outnumber you? Taking ones ball and going home is not the way I like doing things, hence why I became a teacher.

Not all parents are going to teach their kids at home, so yes, those kids will have to be taught somewhere. For those that could teach at home, itb doesn't hurt to hear some of the pros.
