A lot of people don't want to enable addiction and that kind of lifestyle. Or they just don't want to risk engaging with somebody who may be mentally ill. Not everyone on the street fits that description but most do.
There are other ways to help the less fortunate. Like the salvation army or United Way or Goodwill.

You obviously have never been homeless. Talk to someone who used to be homeless, they will tell you the things those that are homeless won't. I had a friend who was homeless. He had a panner asking him for money. He confronted the guy and said he knew the game, he used to be homeless. He asked how much he made a day panning. Homeless guy told him, about $200 a day. My buddy then told him he made way more a day than him in his regular job, and asked why he should give him anything? Homeless guy offered my friend $20.
That's a true story. The homeless that need help are the ones not panning. The panners are quite often doing just fine, in fact, better than a lot of "employed" people.
I do get that. And that may be where I messed up in this post. I only give to pan handlers if it looks like they are really in need. But the guy sleeping on the sidewalk or pushing the cart as you enter Publix? Nobody wants to give that guy $2?

I'm clearly not perfect with it as I still get played, but that's on them not me. See what happens when you start helping the poor and needy. Life gets better.
A better help is to help them clean up for a day, make a resume with your help and help going through interviews and offers for employment. That is real help,. Handing them money is not help, it just enables co-dependency.
Instead of handing the poor money, I volunteer at a local food bank twice a month, and part of the volunteer is offering my time for job hunting during the nights and weekends on an appointment basis. In the last 5 years I have helped over 500 individuals and that led to over half of them leaving the need for being homeless and panhandle or beg.
This is real change that we all want.

There have been more than a few exposes showing many of these people are not even homeless! They live in regular homes and even have another job, because that's all begging is to these people, another job. Their take home isn't too shabby for standing around holding a piece of cardboard all day.
