Edit: u/JesusRules commented below that: Federal law prohibits employers and others from requiring vaccination with a Covid-19 vaccine distributed under an EUA https://www.statnews.com/2021/02/23/federal-law-prohibits-employers-and-others-from-requiring-vaccination-with-a-covid-19-vaccine-distributed-under-an-eua/
u/JesusRules thank you bro, can't wait to see my dad's face when I inform him of this
Original post: To my surprise and dismay, my father, who is in charge of a small workforce, is considering requiring employee COVID vaccinations. He told me this evening. He is meeting with a group tomorrow morning but told me he would be happy to take into account any information I had on why requiring vaccinations might not be a great idea.
With little time on my hands, I took the last two hours or so to put together a very brief summary, with references, for him to consider and hopefully bring up in his discussion tomorrow. I did not get into the, you know, COMPLETE ILLEGALITY AND UNCONSTITUTIONALITY portion of the argument -- I don't have time, knowledge, or intelligence to make that argument, and he and his administrators don't have the capability to understand them anyway which is why they are even talking about this. I am hoping to make the argument on the basis of the science of the vaccines themselves, i.e., they do not prevent transmission of the virus and therefore they DO NOT in ANY WAY protect a workforce.
I put this out here for feedback and as, perhaps, a sad little resource for anyone else who may need it or find it useful. If I receive good feedback, I will update accordingly and repost in the morning.
You will notice the tone is calm and straightforward -- the intended audience are not patriots, are not liberty-minded, are not particularly intelligent, and if we are being honest can barely call themselves Americans in the traditional sense of the word. Anyone who this might actually be useful for will probably fall into that category, so it is deliberately written to be non-confrontational, straightforward, simple, and plain, and any update I make will be along that same vein.
Considerations on Requiring Workplace COVID Vaccinations
Summary:
1.COVID-19 is a disease caused by SARS/Coronavirus2 virus. The vaccine prevents serious illness from the Coronavirus disease, but does not prevent catching the virus and then passing it on.
2.This means that it is possible for someone to get the vaccine and be protected from the disease, but still transmit the virus.
3.Thus, the CDC still recommends that people at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 do not interact with anyone indoors without a mask, even with people who have been vaccinated.
4.This means that requiring employees to be vaccinated will not reduce the danger for other employees or members of their households who are at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
5.Thus, the vaccine does not protect others – it only protects the person being vaccinated. Requiring employees to receive the vaccine does not make the workplace safer.
6.Because COVID-19 vaccines clinical trials only started in the summer of 2020, it’s not yet clear if these vaccines will have long-term side effects, or what those side effects might be.
7.There are a variety of ethical and legal objections to the vaccine, including the fact that Pharmaceutical companies are protected from liability regarding the COVID-19 vaccines, the long-term effects are unknown, and some vaccines were produced using stem cell lines that some religious groups have ethical objections to.
