It is actually really sad. I often get lost in my anger at people for what I perceive to be their ignorance or gullibility, and while these aren't positive traits to be led by, it also shouldn't mean that they are thereby placed at the complete mercy of the overwhelming power of genuinely evil people. They have a huge head start on everyone else. And most people just haven't been paying attention. That's not a crime in itself but it can result in tragedy. We may well end up living through that result as a society for a lifetime or longer.
