I'm surprised that the quote wasn't something like "I beg your pardon, Monsieur. You are, more properly, referring to an aspect of an epoch long past." Perhaps the broken teeth may have caused him to edit it.
EDIT: I looked at the picture again. His wife seems to have got the worst of it. I'm wondering if this wasn't one of those "Oooops! The attacker killed my wife, but, I just got this small cut on my arm..." kind of things. For being attacked 'several times during the night', they seem in pretty good shape.
