3d printer firmware is also primarily open source now. Many hobbyists modify and compile their own customized version of the vanilla firmware source files. It has to be that way since many people build printers from scratch. Outlawing 3d printers means outlawing stepper motors, aluminum extrusions, arduino boards, etc. It's a ridiculous notion.
It'll be just like the attempts to control guns, I mean, nothing is stopping people from machining their own guns, I'm pretty sure it's legal and everything
