Had a real bad one once, not from any cruise (fuck that shit), utter misery for three days straight, anything and everything tries to eject itself from your body at both ends, and you can't/don't want to eat, have to force yourself to drink, pretty much just lie there praying for it to be over.
Fuck, the times I had surgery were infinitely better than that. Slower recovery sure and the painkillers can be a bitch (especially the opiods, they kill your appetite and the feeling is really unpleasant), but nothing compared to the condensed misery of that stomach bug.
I had what I think was salmonella once, didn't go to the hospital even though I probably should have. Anyway, I remember thinking to myself "If this shit doesn't kill me, I'm gonna end it myself" the pain was so bad. I'll take broken bones, blunt trauma, hell probably even being shot, over that again.
You did the right thing not going to the hospital. The only thing worse than dealing with a stomach bug at home is doing it in the ER where you'll have to wait 4 hours for 20 illegal aliens to get their annual physical and 5 druggies to get their narcan before you can be seen. And once they do see you all you're going to get is an IV with fluids to replace what you're shitting out.
They have anti-diarrehals and anti-emetics, but most doctors won't give it to you unless you tell them you've had the runs or the pukes for 3 or 4 days straight.
Seriously everyone knows the risks at this point. If you're worried about COVID, then don't go.
I'd take covid any day over stomach bugs.
