It's not nearly as difficult as Chinese, but it's a lot more difficult than any Romance or Germanic languages. On the plus side, getting enough basics to get by is not too difficult. I just told them "I speak Russian badly," then used caveman Russian to explain what I wanted/needed, they were all very accommodating and spoke slowly, and used simple words so I could understand them. Once you have that much understanding (took me less than a year studying on my own) you can fill in the grammar later.

The grammar in Slavic languages is ridiculous. Russian is a bit easier since it has 6 cases while other Slavic languages have 7 but still crazy hard.
