I think it’s important we rephrase the argument. The government can’t violate the 2nd amendment without violating the entire constitution, including the bill of rights. If you support “gun control” or “gun safety “, then it’s easy to say:
we should tax free speech, public assembly, religious attendance, petitions against government
right to privacy and rights against government seizures requires a background check
trial by jury is only meant for military and law enforcement
I support 2A, but to me it’s more important to support the entire constitution. If we erode one part of it, we erode our faith in government. I love our rights and I want to see them all protected.
Probably a less popular opinion, but personally I would even be willing to extend an olive branch to the other side and say we can have “common sense” gun laws, but only by constitutional amendment. If you can’t get enough support for your idea to pass law via constitutionally prescribed mechanisms, maybe it’s not “common sense”.
