You should get a proper mask for that. They usually sell them at hardware stores. Half face respirators are good for working with wood dust. If you're going to work with solvents and oils, the p100 cartridge is the way to go.
Can confirm. I recently put about a dozen cans of spray paint down on some corrugated steel panels I used as wainscoting in the shop. P100 filters on my 3M 6000 series respirator, I couldn't smell even the hint of solvent.
