Enriched uranium doesn’t come from the earth, and after undergoing the fission process in the reactor, becomes highly radioactive for 10,000 years. They should have kept the core cooled so it wouldn’t melt down, but now that it is, they need to extract the core and reprocess it.
Enrisched is purified from dirty, those atoms were already here. Changing to elements/isotopes in a reactor that emit more energy faster is not more radiaion. It's more radiation per time. All energy flow is downhill. The Earth is cooler (radioactivley) now than it was when it was newly formed.
Fun fact: the radiation came from the Earth in the first place.
