Perhaps because of his WW2 service meaning he’s a veteran and we (normal people) feel bad at the loss of any of them. It’s true that not all people who have fought on behalf of others are virtuous and good people through and through but putting your life on the line in war means risking losing it. I have respect for all veterans and their loss is also our loss.
