I hope this slight mishap doesn’t prevent him from starting community college in the fall and starting the process of completely turning his life around which includes actually being in his children's lives. Or are those things only ever on the horizon when the person is dead?

I'm surprised he didn't take advantage of the Bush II era tax break to get training in biotech or get himself into a well-paying green energy job given how common those apparently are now.
