Modem is the correct term. Digital signals cannot be sent wirelessly without a modem. Your home internet still uses a modem is just typically built into the router and WiFi access point and called a gateway. There's no need for the old dial tone modems but modems are still all around us. There is no credibility loss related to the use of the term modem.
