If I remember correctly, they were selling guns to the cartel. Not just guns, but semi-automatics that they turned into automatics. Then one of them stupidly sold to an undercover ATF agent.
Also if I recall... they got into financial trouble because they kept moving to bigger communes without selling the previous commune.
They were selling guns but I don't think the Atf ever provided any evidence that there was anything illegal happening. Lots of allegations came out after they were burned alive.
