I'm guess its mostly virtue signaling. Most people have been seeing their family without the mask.

my coworkers (we are teachers) would not see their relatives until they were vaccinated. they complained about not being able to see them over the holidays, and once they got the vaccine, they were literally crying because they were so happy to see them again. it makes no sense to me

They can't just admit they got conned.

So they'll invent new schemes to cover for the previous mistake.

I never knew the nursery rhyme was a deep psychological treatise on the flawed and deadly human condition of somebody who cannot admit a mistake.
