It happened long ago (look at the graduating years of the current 4 stars) and those of us in middle management are stuck...probably much like large swaths of the private sector.
Any rank above Brigadier General/Commodore (1-Star) is political, that's why you see commie purges of the command ranks whenever they get into the white house.
Do you mean that when they weed out "extremists", it mostly applies to higher ranking officers? Will the lower enlisted not be affected by this as much?
Not really, since any General that wears more then one star on their shoulder is in some effect a political appointee (outside of wartime like WW2). It wasn't unusual for strategic commands to have their generals changed along with the Pentagon, but Obama went the furthest of any President in history to the best of my knowledge and basically used the full capability of the office to remove all Generals and Admirals above the aftermentioned one star from their commands and appointing hand picked degenerates and yesmen to those vacated positions.
Unsurprisingly, most of the Generals that lost their commands decided to retire rather then risk their pensions stepping on the wrong toes of the new political wave.

Do you mean that they don't promote people to four star general anymore? They just keep the same ones forever?
