Using myself as an anecdote: I don't wear a mask probably 90% of the time. I don't wear it to the post office, where there are signs mandating it, I don't wear it to most places.
I do wear it at the grocery store because I've run into a few Karen-esque wailing banshees who will happily yell at elderly men, invading their personal space (so much for their concern about spreading a virus to the infirm), and just make a complete idiot out of themselves. I hate shopping, so if it's one minor stupid thing I have to do to avoid the retards that will make an abysmal experience even worse, I'll do it to blend in. Except if I'm wearing one that has a naughty phrase on it.
Most of the people I know who wear masks do it to avoid being hassled. In my experience, if I'm gonna get harassed by a wailing Karen, calling her an idiot for believing Fauci isn't really going to win me any points with her to spread the truth, and the only people who will agree with me are the ones who already agree.
It really depends on my mood, tolerance threshold, and whether I really want to look for a fight that day.
