The same could be said for masks. I believe it was NYC, 76% of infected report always wearing a mask. Another 20% reported wearing masks most of the time.

Masks are like washing out the sperm to prevent pregnancy. Better than nothing, but a bad strategy overall.

Worse than nothing really, they get both hot and moist real quick, perfect conditions for a virus to cling to.

That's the perfect condition for bacteria, warm, moist, and if you've eaten in the last 12 hours they have access to glucose which is created from saliva breaking down bread(s). Viruses will just hijack the bacteria, creating a win-win cycle.
